# DOJ Announces Largest Health Care Fraud Takedown in Department History
The U.S. Department of Justice announced charges against 324 defendants on June 30, 2025, in connection with health care fraud schemes involving approximately $14.6 billion in false claims submitted to Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal health care programs. Matthew R. Galeotti, head of the Criminal Division, described the coordinated takedown as the largest in DOJ history.
The enforcement action identified a disturbing trend involving transnational criminal organizations operating from Russia, Eastern Europe, Pakistan, and other foreign countries. Authorities dismantled a sophisticated scheme run from Russia and Eastern Europe in which perpetrators purchased dozens of U.S. medical supply companies and submitted over $10 billion in fraudulent Medicare claims using stolen identities of more than one million Americans across all 50 states. Federal agents arrested key members of that organization at U.S. airports and the U.S.-Mexico border.
The takedown resulted in the seizure of cash, luxury vehicles, and properties being returned to American taxpayers and federal health care programs. Among those charged were 74 medical professionals. DOJ officials emphasized that health care fraud directly harms American taxpayers who fund these essential programs and threatens their long-term viability for seniors and disabled Americans.
