# 24 State Attorneys General Defend Birthright Citizenship Before Supreme Court
Twenty-four state attorneys general issued a joint statement as oral arguments began in Trump v. Barbara, a case challenging President Trump's executive order to end birthright citizenship. The attorneys general argued the executive order violates the Constitution, federal law, and 150 years of established precedent guaranteeing citizenship to those born in the United States.
Washington Attorney General Nick Brown led the legal challenge, filing suit in January 2025 along with three other states. Washington secured a nationwide injunction that prevented the executive order from taking effect. The Supreme Court chose to hear the case rather than review Washington's original challenge, though the injunction remains in effect.
The 24 states expressed optimism the Supreme Court would uphold birthright citizenship protections, noting that every judge who previously considered the executive order on the merits found it unconstitutional. The case represents a major constitutional challenge over citizenship rights and executive authority.
